WHO WE ARE
Welcome to the North America Chapter of Owerri Government Secondary School (OGSS), Alumni Association, otherwise known as the Old Boys Association (OBA). OGSS is located in Southeastern Nigeria; it was founded in 1935 by the British Colonial Administration as one of three all boys’ high schools in the former Eastern Region of Nigeria; over the years the institution has excelled in its mission as the citadel for academic scholarship and excellence, scholastic aptitude, skills acquisition, character-building and human development;
it remains an ideal place for teaching and learning where young boys admitted through competitive entrance examinations, drawn from various parts of the country including other African countries are tutored and nurtured by the best cadre of teachers hired from different countries around the world. OGSS has earned the pride of place in producing men who have become very successful in various endeavors and professional calling especially in the fields of Science and Technology, Medicine, Law, and Liberal Arts. Many have gained tremendous post-qualification expertise to serve in various capacities and positions, becoming captains of industries in the North America and elsewhere around the world.
The OGSS North America OBA was formally inaugurated on July 22, 2023 in Houston Texas. The gathering brought together alumni groups from various corners of America and Canada; others from the country of Mexico who could not be there are expected to join in future and subsequent Reunion Events. The Association has been formed to serve as a vehicle for fostering brotherly love, building network of relationship that enhances collaboration, communication and shared interest and commitment towards giving back to our Alma Mater for posterity and the common good. The goal is also to restore the esteemed legacy of OGSS to remain a leading Model High School where the members of staff stand in position of parents, ready to raise kids in a structured boarding environment; the kids grow up to become young adults, useful to themselves, their families, and the society at large. They eventually join the larger generation of Old Boys popularly known as Ogssians.
The Association is also committed to creating opportunities in support of economic development, social welfare and interpersonal upliftment that benefit the Ogssian Family both locally and globally. The success of our Old Boys in their respective fields of endeavors, will ultimately contribute towards building a vibrant community in focus and purpose, making it possible to remember where we come from.
The Association is also dedicated towards empowering the up-and-coming band of OGSS students through the award of scholarships, support in mentorship programs; bootcamps including guidance, counseling and motivational engagements sponsored to help build and sustain confidence and emotional strength amongst the students. The North America OBA is also interested in supporting sports development through direct delivery of sporting goods and equipment to the homeland.
Fund-raising activities and special events including membership contributions are expected to create the needed financial leverage for sustaining the activities of the OBA including infrastructural renewal at OGSS. We invite friends, neighbors, and well-wishers to join us as we usher in a new vista for our Alma Mater, Government Secondary School, Owerri, where the story of who we are and what we have become started from.
